New Fire Appliances for London

The London Fire Brigade have a very large number of appliances on order for delivery over the next two years. On this page you can find more information about them, as well as allocations, fleet numbers, registrations and photographs.

ALPs (Aerial Ladder Platforms)
Nine Aerial Ladder Platforms are currently on order. These are similar to the three ALPs delivered in 2002, being based on Mercedes-Benz Econic chassis. However, they have the new Magirus ALP325 boom and some other modifications. The first four will be replacing the current Volvo ALPs and HPs, and the other five appliances will be reserves. The three current Mercedes ALPs will remain operational, as these have different booms to the new appliances.

BWCs (Bulk Water Carriers)
Six bulk water carriers were delivered to the brigade in 2005, but have still yet to come on the run after numerous problems encountered with their tilt tests. However, it is hoped that the vehicles will be on the run soon. They are currently being stored at Ruislip Workshops.
The proposed locations are Islington, Sidcup, Dagenham, Croydon, Harrow and Kingston, although it is possible these may be changed before the appliances come on the run.

CSUs (Command Support Units)
Nine command support units have been delivered to the brigade, and these are now operational. They are Mercedes-Benz Atego 1224R models, which have a lower chassis. The bodywork was built by Spectra. The nine appliances have replaced the Brigade Command Unit and three divisional command pod units. They have been based at eight new locations, with the ninth vehicle as a reserve. These locations are Islington, Lewisham, Edmonton, Barking, Fulham, Woodside, Twickenham and Wembley.

DPLs (Dual Purpose Ladders)
An order was placed for 109 new Mercedes-Benz Atego DPLs. These feature the new styling and a slightly different crew cab, as well as new LED lightbars replacing the older beacons. DPL1207-DPL1236 are having their bodywork assembled by TVAC, whilst DPL1237 onwards will be having their bodies assembled by Papworth SVO.
The new appliances will be replacing all of the Volvo FL6 DPLs, as well as the older Mercedes DPLs, which will then be used as reserves. The new Mercedes are generally becoming Pump Ladders, although there are a few exceptions.
